But what is the story behind Lord Vishnu marrying Tulsi? Let's find out here.

Why Did Lord Vishnu Marry Tulsi?

According to mythology, demon king Jalandhar had once created terror in all the three worlds. Jalandhar could not be killed as long as Vrinda continued to be faithful to him. It is believed that this is when Lord Vishnu decided to play a trick and he took the form of Jalandhar and broke Vrinda’s chastity. Due to this the king of Jalandhar was killed by Lord Shiva.

After breaking her duty as a wife, Vrinda not only committed suicide but also cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into stone. He wanted to apologize for his wrongdoing and bring Vrida back to justice. The Lord transformed her soul, turning her into a Holy Basil plant. Vishnu Dev allowed him to marry Vrinda in her next incarnation because of his wrongdoing. The famous Tulsi vivah ceremony originated from this folktale.

As per many Hindu scriptures, Tulsi Mata is a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu’s wife. According to Hindu mythology, she was born as Vrinda. In India, the Tulsi Vivah puja is performed by married women for the well-being of their husbands and families.
