The safety quotient of Tata cars is unquestionable. The homegrown automaker has set a benchmark for offering top-notch safety in mass-market vehicles in India. The Tata Safari, Harrier, Punch, Nexon, and their respective electric versions have scored a perfect five-star safety rating in the Global and Bharat NCAP crash test. However, not all vehicles Tata Motors sells have a five-star safety rating. The Tata Tiago and Tigor have scored four stars in the crash test conducted by Global NCAP, making the pair the least safest Tata cars on sale in India.

Tata Tiago/Tigor Global NCAP Safety Rating
The latest crash tests conducted by Global NCAP on the Tiago and Tigor were published in 2021. Carried out at a speed of 64 km/h, the hatchback and compact sedan scored 12.52 points out of a maximum of 17 points in adult occupant protection. The pair scored 34.15 points out of 49.00 points in child occupant protection. On the basis of these scores, Global NCAP awarded the Tiago and Tigor an overall safety rating of four stars.
Global NCAP Assessment Protocols Were Updated in 2022
Global NCAP updated its safety protocols in 2022. Earlier, the testing agency's focus for Indian cars revolved around three safety parameters: dual-front airbags, ABS, and structural integrity. Only the front offset crash test was conducted, and the vehicles were rated for their adult occupant protection and child occupant protection.

In addition to the front offset crash test, the side impact, side pole impact, and pedestrian protection protocols were added to Global NCAP's crash test evaluations in 2022. However, performing well in all these parameters does not automatically award a five-star safety rating. The vehicle would also have to feature safety systems such as electronic stability control, six airbags, and ISOFIX child seat anchor points as standard.
Since the Tiago and Tigor received their four-star safety rating in 2019, their ratings are likely to change if tested according to Global NCAP's new protocols. A case in point is the current-generation Honda Amaze, whose rating dropped from four stars (test conducted in 2019) to two stars (test conducted in 2024).

Standard Safety Features On The Tata Tiago/Tigor
The Tata Tiago/Tigor's standard safety features include dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, ISOFIX child seat, rear parking sensors, and three-point safety belts for all passengers. Prices for the Tiago start from Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom) and go up to Rs 7.64 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tigor retails in India at a starting price of Rs 5.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Its top trim costs Rs 8.39 lakh (ex-showroom).
