Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud on Friday completed his last board of cases in the Supreme Court of India. A photo of him rising up from his Chair after completing his cases is going viral on social media.
When CJI Chandrachud retires on November 10, it will mark the culmination of an action-packed, eventful two years as the head of the Indian judiciary. If CJI Chandrachud's achievements in the past 2 years are anything to go by, he is a man who successfully embarked on a mission to completely transform the Indian judiciary by harnessing information technology be it on the judicial or administrative side and making courts at all levels more accessible, inclusive with a slew of citizen-centric services.
Some of them are expanding of virtual courts and making them a permanent feature, E-Courts(use of technology to reduce the carbon footprint and make courts paperless), E-Filing(The use of an online portal for filing cases), E-Sewa Kendras (The establishment of centres to assist lawyers and litigants with e-filing), E-Copying (The development of a module to speed up the process of obtaining certified copies) and Su-Swagatham (An online portal for visitors to the Supreme Court to apply for e-entry passes).
The period has been exceptional as it led to the introduction of several path-breaking initiatives that include adoption of cutting-edge technology to improve access to justice and efficiency all in the midst of delivering several landmark rulings upholding personal liberty, women’s rights and gender equality, rights of the differently-abled.
