'spat out bone-like object': chandigarh man claims to order veg momos from zomato, says 'hurt sentiments'

Chandigarh: In Chandigarh, a Chinese restaurant and food delivery app Zomato has been ordered to pay a compensation amount for delivering non-vegetarian momos to a man who had ordered the vegetarian version for his family. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Chandigarh noted that the wrong delivery had caused emotional distress to the family. As a punishment, the two firms, including Zomato, have to refund the amount of Rs 154 paid for the order, and Rs 5,000 as compensation.

Suryam, the complainant, said that he had placed an order of vegetarian momos and noodles from Sanju Chinese Fast Food in Sector 15, Chandigarh. He had received the parcel on April 9, 2023, through Zomato. The order was for his minor daughter and elderly mother, he added. Suryam stated that his family is strictly vegetarian and “follows Sanatan Dharma,” said a report by The Indian Express.

"My Mother Realised"

When the family started to eat, the elderly mother found a bone-like object that she instantly spat out, realising that it was a piece of non-vegetarian food. He stated that his mother has been on depression medication for 20 years, severe emotional distress. The man said that the complainant alleged that the mistake deeply impacted the family.

When he attempted to file a complaint, he received an uncooperative response from them. In its defence, the Sanju Chinese Fast Food said it had packed and handed-over the right item to the Zomato delivery guy. It further said that any mix-up could have occurred at Zomato’s end. It further claimed that the packaging clearly marked for vegetarian or non-vegetarian items and that it was unlikely the complainant’s mother would not notice the difference in appearance or aroma.

Zomato has not responded to the notice from the Commission yet.
