Mumbai: As Mumbai prepares for Diwali festivities, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain and thundershowers in the city and its neighbouring districts in the coming days. While no alerts have been issued for Mumbai and Thane, a yellow alert (be aware) has been issued for Raigad district from Wednesday to Thursday. However, as per IMDâs latest forecast, showers are expected directly on November 2, and 3. On Diwali day, there will be clear sky with a possibility of thunder lightning.
On October 15, the IMD announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai. Although light showers continued afterwards, the monsoon gradually receded, leading to a rise in temperatures. Data from the IMD indicated that from Sunday to Monday morning, both the island city and suburban areas recorded no rainfall, with a total of 0 mm. Meanwhile, northerly winds kept temperatures one degree below normal, ranging from 33 to 34 degrees Celsius.
Starting Wednesday, light rainfall and thundershowers are expected in Mumbai and Thane until Thursday and Friday, respectively. In Raigad and Ratnagiri, the IMD has issued a yellow warning between Wednesday and Friday due to the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate showers, and gusty winds.
To ease concerns about heavy rainfall, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, stated that the city is likely to experience only light showers accompanied by thunderstorm activity during the evenings. âCurrently, there is an upper air cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea at 1.5 km above sea level. This system is expected to bring some rain activity in the coming days. Since a yellow alert has been issued in Raigad, we anticipate some light rain and thundershowers in Mumbai as well,â he said, as quoted byThe Indian Express.
