Bengaluru: A video showing water gushing down walls and pooling around Manyata Tech Park had recently gone viral on social media after heavy rain lashed the city. Now, someone tagged the location as "Manyata Waterfalls" on Google Maps because of the waterfall-like visuals. What followed it was the sarcastic reviews where one user jokingly wrote “Lovely waterfall, great sightseeing from the hustling and bustling of Bangalore".
Heavy monsoon rains flooded several parts of Bengaluru, with the city recording over 150mm of rain in a single day, causing severe waterlogging across tech parks, streets, and residential areas.
Manyata Tech Park, housing numerous multinational corporations, experienced heavy flooding, which caused commuters to navigate through knee-high water levels.
The “Manyata Waterfalls” listing incident is an example of local humor in response to Bengaluru's frequent infrastructure issues, which worsens during monsoon season.
However, Embassy REIT, which oversees Manyata Tech Park, soon clarified that the viral scene wasn’t from within the tech park but rather from a nearby area.
Bengaluru has seen this kind of viral post earlier as well. Last year, the Ejipura flyover gained attention, after it was named "Bengaluru’s Stonehenge" on Google Maps. The incomplete and abandoned flyover became a social media sensation for its resemblance to the ancient UK monument. Its listing garnered sarcastic reviews as well, suggesting that it was a must-see.
Though removed from Google Maps, the “Manyata Waterfalls” listing and other similar instances capture a growing trend of using humour and the internet to discuss about the city’s infrastructure.
