adarsh gourav on 7 years of rukh: manoj bajpayee advised me to go to drama school - exclusive

Atanu Mukherjee’s Rukhis a film that magnetizes our attention not through its action but by its absence. Starring Manoj Bajpayee and Adarsh Gourav, it released in 2017. The film follows the story of Dhruv, a teenager, who learns about his father's death in a road accident. When he sets to unfold the truth, life-altering secrets are unravelled.

As Rukh turns 7, Adarsh Gourav, who played Manoj Bajpayee’s son in the film, spoke to Zoom exclusively. It was his first film as the protagonist. He opened up about his experience, Rukh’s failure and more.

Excerpts from the interview:

Where do you place Rukh in your career?

Rukh will always be the film that shaped my career. I got to work with not just brilliant co-actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Smita Tambe and Kumud Mishra but also amazing technicians like Puja Gupte(dop), and Atanu(director and editor).

What was the environment like on the sets while making this grim film?

I was introduced to an eco-system where craft and art were discussed more often. It was while shooting for Rukh was when I had a long conversation with Manoj sir and he advised me to go to drama school.

It was your first prominent big-screen role?

It was the first time I played the protagonist in a film! It was the period where independent movies were being made all around, OTT platforms were thriving and every week we had an exciting film to look forward to.

Were you affected by the darkness that shrouded your character?

Not the character but the shoot itself was very memorable. Shot an entire feature with a tight crew in less than thirty days. It left a big impression on me and made me realise how hard it is to make a film.

Were you disappointed by its failure?

I was lucky I got to work with incredible people and I had no complaints. I’m still very close to Puja and Atanu. Rukh was where I understood what went into preparing for a character and what not to do while preparing for a role.
