Kolkata: In the upcoming days, the city is expected to be impacted by Cyclone Dana. According to a release by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area over east-central Bay of Bengal, continuing to move northwestwards is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 24 and cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island between the night of October 24 and the morning of October 25. In light of the potential cyclonic impact, Kolkata airport authorities have begun preparations to handle any situation arising from the storm.
Cyclone Dana is predicted to bring heavy rainfall to various districts, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24-Parganas, Jhargram, and other areas in Gangetic West Bengal on October 24 and 25. The meteorological department forecasts wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, on the morning of October 25.
Today, the IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers in Kolkata. The maximum temperature is expected to be 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be 25 degrees Celsius.
Kolkata Weekly Weather Forecast
In view of the upcoming effects of Cyclone Dana, the city is expected to experience a week of rainfall. On October 24 and 25, Kolkata is expected to witness a generally cloudy sky with heavy rain. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 27 and 28 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may fluctuate between 23 and 24 degrees Celsius.
On October 26, the city is expected to have a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. The maximum temperature is expected to be 30 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature is expected to be 25 degrees Celsius.
Finally, on October 27 and 28, Kolkata is likely to experience partly cloudy skies with the possibility of rain or thunderstorms. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will be around 26 degrees Celsius.
Kolkata Airport Authorities on Alert
Kolkata Airport is making preparations to tackle the impending effects of Cyclone Dana. Standard operating procedures, such as inspecting airport infrastructure and drainage systems, as well as checking and servicing all installations, are being carried out, PTI reported.
Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Director of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, said that the potential impact on flight operations will depend on the situation after the cyclone makes landfall.
