Teens may seem like fully grown adults, and in some ways they even are but there are still many things they need to learn. They have a tendency to do things and say things that are really mean and uncalled for, which makes the situation bad and really difficult to resolve. What they will struggle with the most when they lack emotional skills is maintaining genuine relationships like close friends and a future partner. But when they do learn the skills, they will have an easier time navigating the complexities of their teenage and find ways to cope with differences and have a healthy outlet for their feeling. Here are some emotional skills your teen should know.
What is being self-awareness?
Teens must learn how to recognize and understand one's own emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. While you may be judging someone else for how they behave and how they do certain things, you might be doing the same. Self-awareness brings you ways to improve yourself and be better as well.
What is self-regulation?
Self- regulations is not just about having things in moderation, like junk food but also about managing one's emotions and impulses in a healthy way. You should know what is bad for you and what should be done in a limited manner. It helps you keep yourself in check and learn how to follow rules for yourself.
Importance of staying motivated
This may be a difficult thing for teens as they tend to drop things as soon as they pick it up. Setting goals and staying motivated to achieve them means they do not give up when there are hurdles. You must power through and be better at what you do even if it takes time.
What is empathy?
When you put yourself in someone else shoes and try to feel just a fraction of what they might’ve felt is what means to have empathy. When you try understanding and sharing the feelings of others you treat them with kindness and find the ways to make them feel better. That is what it means to have empathy.
What are social skills?
When you are in a situation where you are surrounded with people and you wish to talk to them, you must have social skills to start the conversation. Interacting effectively with others, including building and maintaining relationships will help your teen to be the best version of themselves!
What is stress management?
Teenage can be a stressful time when you have too many things going on for them like academics, social circle and their future worries. Developing healthy coping mechanisms for dealing with stress and anxiety will help them keep away form unhealthy coping mechanisms like smoking and drinking.
Having decision making skills
Learning how to make informed decisions is the best thing a teen can learn because they are making thoughtful choices. Teens are famously known for making dumb decisions so this will spare them the embarrassment of doing something stupid later on.
