New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invitation for the upcoming BRICS Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday. This will be Prime Minister Modi’s second visit to the country this year.
In July this year, PM Modi visited Russia for a two-day visit, his first since the country’s war with Ukraine, to attend the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit. PM Modi met Putin at his residence outside Moscow, followed by talks at the Kremlin. PM Modi was also conferred the ‘Order of St Andrew the Apostle’ award by President Putin for his contribution to fostering bilateral ties between the two countries. The award was announced in 2019
Putin hosted PM Modi for a private meeting and dinner at his residence in Novo-Ogarevo, clearly reflecting the importance Moscow attached to the Indian leader's visit. The two leaders were seen having a warm conversation in an informal setting.
Whats On Agenda?
PM Modi will be visiting Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be in Kazan for the BRICS summit.
During his visit, the prime minister is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member countries and invited leaders in Kazan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
The theme of this year's summit is "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security". It will provide an important platform for leaders to discuss key global issues, it said.
"The summit will offer a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and to identify potential areas for future collaboration," the ministry said.
