The Indian cricket team had one of their worst days in Test cricket history on Thursday (October 18) on the second day of play in the first Test match between India and New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday (October 18), as the hosts were bowled for just 46 runs in the first innings.
After the first day of play was washed out, the Rohit Sharma-led side won the toss and chose to bat first in overcast conditions. The decision backfired as the New Zealand pace attack ran riot. Five Indian players registered ducks, while just two managed to make double-digit scores.

India's total of 46 was the first instance of a team being all-out in a Test match on Asian soil (hosted by either India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, or the or the United Arab Emirates) to be bowled for less than 50 in an innings in the longest format of the game.
Previously, the lowest total by either a home or away team on Asian soil was held by the West Indies, who were bowled out for 53 against Pakistan in 1986 at Faislabad. Interesingly, the previous lowest Test score in India was registered by New Zealand, who were bowled out for 62 against India at Mumbai in 2021.

Meanwhile, this was the third-lowest Test score by India after 36 vs. Australia (Adelaide, 2020) and 42 (England, 1974). It is also India’s lowest-ever total at home. Previously, India’s worst innings at home came against the West Indies in 1987, when they managed to make just 75 runs at Delhi.
India registered five ducks in their innings for the second time in history at home. The previous two instances also came against New Zealand in 1999 at Mohali's iconic PCA Stadium. This was also only the second time in Test cricket history of five ducks in an innings by the top 8 with the only previous instance happening 136-year-old ago by Australia agaisnt England in Manchester.
