Los Angeles: Meta has reportedly fired two dozen employees in Los Angeles. The reason is going against the company policy regarding using ＄25 daily meal cards. The misuse of the card involved employees using the card’s balance to buy utility items like detergent, wine glasses, and various other household items. This went against the motive of why the meal cards were issued in the first place, for buying meals. Meta provided multiple allowances for different meals of the day. It gives a daily allowance of ＄20 for breakfast, ＄25 for lunch and ＄25 for dinner. Meal cards were issued in ＄25 additional. This monetary displacement of meal allowance has been happening in the company for quite a long time, the reports said. The company reportedly dismissed these employees last week. This happened a few days before Meta announced a revamping of WhatsApp, Reality Labs Team and Instagram.
The company did not fire all the employees who were found guilty of violating this company policy. People found violating this policy only occasionally were criticized, but not dismissed, unlike those who repeated this activity several times.
This layoff raises concerns about employees' misconduct and non-compliance with the company’s policies in the tech industry. Many employees pooled this money for even bigger purchases, while others still bought food from that card. The only difference? They had that food delivered to their homes.
According to the FT report, a former Meta employee shared more about this behavior. The employee, on the promise of anonymity, shared that on days when they were not eating at the office, they felt that throwing away the card was a waste of money and could be used to buy items of daily use like toothpaste and toothbrush from local department stores like Rite Aid.
