Mumbai Indians (MI) made a big change in their coaching staff before the IPL 2025 retention date and reappointed Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach. The Sri Lankan legend worked as MI's head coach from IPL 2017 to 2022. Jayawarde was promoted after IPL 2022 and he became the overall head of the franchises owned by MI across different leagues.
The three-time IPL-winning head coach is now back with MI and he will only be working with the Mumbai-based franchise. Jayawardene's return means that Mark Boucher isn't part of the coaching staff now. Is Sachin Tendulkar also part of MI's coaching staff or has he left the franchise?
Sachin Tendulkar will continue to be the icon of MI and will once again work with Jayawardene. The Master Blaster joined MI as their icon following his retirement from the game and has been working for the franchise.
Sachin retired from IPL after winning the title in 2013. Later in the year, Sachin played his last game for MI in the final of the Champions League. MI defeated Rajasthan Royals to win the title.
Before IPL 2014, Sachin joined MI as their icon. Sachin didn't travel to UAE for IPL 2020. Next year, he missed the first half of the season. Sachin travelled to UAE for the second half of IPL 2021.
Sachin's son, Arjun Tendulkar joined Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2021 mini-auction for Rs 20 lakh. MI bought Arjun for Rs 30 lakh in the IPL 2022 mega-auction. The all-rounder made his IPL debut in 2023.
Will Hardik Pandya continue to lead MI?
No change is expected to MI's leadership role and Hardik Pandya looks set to continue as the captain. He made his return to MI from Gujarat Titans via trade and replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain. Hardik-led MI finished at the last spot in the points table. MI are expected to give a long rope to the star all-rounder.
