Pakistan cricket is going through a significant lean run across formats. The team performed poorly in the most recent ODI and T20 World Cups before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Bangladesh at home. The team also lost to England in the first Test by an innings before taking a massive decision and dropping Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Naseem Shah from the squad for the following two Tests.
After the England series, Pakistan would be up against Australia in a three-match ODI series. The series will give teams a clear idea of where they stand ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, set to be played in Pakistan. The Men in Green haven't played a lot of ODI cricket in recent times and last featured in the ODI World Cup 2023 where they made a group stage exit so getting used to the format will be challenging.
Australia recently announced the squad for the ODI series. Pat Cummins returned as captain while Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh were rested for the ODI series.
In the absence of Mitchell Marsh, Jake Frazer McGurk can open alongside Matthew Short. Marnus Labuschagne should bat at 3, followed by Steve Smith at 4. Josh Inglish can come at 5 and Glenn Maxwell can play the finisher role. Marcus Stoinis will play the all-rounder's role while Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood will form a potent fast-bowling attack. Adam Zampa will be the lead spinner.
