Roorkee: A major tragedy was averted in Uttarakhand’s Roorkee just days after the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati express derailed after ramming into a goods train. An empty LPG cylinder was discovered on the railway track near Dhandhera railway station in Roorkee, Uttarakhand on Sunday.
The train's driver spotted the cylinder and promptly alerted railway authorities, averting a possible derailment. As the officials spotted the cylinder, it was found to be empty. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at a local police station in Roorkee, said a railway official.
"At 06:35, the loco pilot of a goods train (BCNHL/32849) informed the Station Master at Roorkee (RK) that a cylinder was found on the track between Landaura (LDR) and Dhandhera (DNRA) at km 1553/01. The spot is about one KM from DNRA station," said Himanshu Upadhyay, CPRO Northern Railways.
"Pointsman immediately reached the spot and found the cylinder to be completely empty. It was later placed under the custody of the Station Master at Dhandhera. Local Police and GRP have been informed. An FIR is being registered in local PS – Civil Lines, Roorkee," he added.
This comes as restoration work is underway in Kavaraipettai, Tamil Nadu, after the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati express derailed after ramming into a goods train. The Train No 12578 Mysuru – Darbhanga Bagmati Express collided with a stationary goods train at Kavaraipettai around 8.30 pm on October 11 and derailed.
According to an official statement by the Indian Railways, the train crew "experienced heavy jerk" as it "entered into Loop/line and collided with stable Goods train in loop line".
Immediately after the accident the southern railway and Tamil Nadu government machinery swung into action to douse the flames of a blazing coach and in rescuing the passengers.
As of now, a total of 10 coaches, including 9 AC coaches and a power car from Train No. 12578 Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express which collided on to a goods train on October 11 at 8.30 pm at Kavaraipettai, and two wagons of the goods train, have been removed using cranes.
