ipl 2025: good news for rcb! bcci decide against india debut for rs. 5 crore star yash dayal; sets stage for retention with 20% pay cut

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru would have breathed a sigh of relief after the Board of Control for India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand ahead of the deadline to announce the list of retained players for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

The squad was on expected terms with Yash Dayal the only absentee from the team that defeated Bangladesh 2-0. Dayal did not make his debut during the two-match series and was named in Uttar Pradesh's (UP) playing XI for the Ranji Trophy clash against Bengal earlier in the day indicating that he was not in India's plan for the New Zealand series.

Why Yash Dayal's Absence Is Good News For RCB?

Dayal’s absence for the Indian team will come as delightful news for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as he cannot make his debut for the national team in any format till 31st October. This means that the left-arm pacer will remain uncapped before RCB has to submit their retention list.

For those unversed, the BCCI has mandated that a minimum of one (maximum of 2) retained player among the six allowed has to be uncapped. Any player who has not played for India yet does not have to fall in the retention caps of Rs. 18, 14, or 14 crore can stay with his franchise for Rs. 4 crore.

This offers the chance for RCB to retain a player they purchased for Rs. 5 crore last year with a 20% pay cut. With RCB giving him a platform for an incredible comeback after a disastrous season at Gujarat Titans (GT) and bids lower in the mega auction, it will be surprising if Dayal rejects the offer to stay.

Dayal was a key reason behind the Bengaluru-based franchise's stunning turnaround in the 2024 season, as he took 15 wickets in 14 matches. The 26-year-old famously dismissed MS Dhoni in the nail-biting final over of RCB's win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a virtual quarter-final.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were handed a blow as both Nitish Reddy and Mayank Yadav made their debut for India in the 1st T20I against Bangladesh. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will hope Harshit Rana is not handed his debut cap in the third and final T20I on Saturday (October 12).
