Uthaya Kumar who holds a PhD in Statistics and served as an assistant professor at an engineering college found his calling in an entrepreneurial venture. Kumar who was on duty met a customer who got inspired by his inspirational story of leadership and took to LinkedIn to share this experience with the world.
According to the LinkedIn post of Ramabhadran Sundaram, his cab ride turned into an inspirational feat when he heard the story of his cab driver, Uthaya Kumar.
Kumar is a former ‘ISRO scientist’ who hails from a small town in Tamil Nadu. His work at ISRO included him ‘minimizing bubbles in liquid fuels to keep its density in check that avoids blasting during launch’. Kumar’s journey at ISRO lasted for 7 years before he took on the adventure of entrepreneurship. In his post, Sundaram claimed that Kumar had set it this company with the help of a few friends who ‘pooled money’ to help him launch his business. The name of his start-up is ST Cabs where S stands for Sukumaran and T stands for Thulasi, the name of Uthaya Kumar’s parents.

What started as an idea turned into a successful cab business. Today Kumar, ‘along with his brother owns a fleet of 37 cars which earns them an annual revenue of Rs. 2 crore’. Although this journey was not an easy one, with the right strategies Kumar was able to build a profit-generating business.
In his post, Sundaram said that Kumar found a ‘market opportunity in IT/ITES companies helped him grow to 3 pick-ups and drop-offs every day’ where he charged Rs. 2500 per trip resulting in a positive cash flow. He also stated how Kumar’s revenue-sharing partnership is at a ratio of 70-30 and that he doesn’t pay a salary to his drivers. He also gave the readers a sneak peek into how Kumar manages his finances by ‘setting aside 1.5L a month for living expenses and saving to build accommodation facilities for a few of his migrant driver-partners’.
This story has given the Teach For India alumni a unique perspective and left him inspired to come across more such stories in his lifetime.
