An 81-year-old woman was shot and killed by her husband at Apple Rehab in Cromwell, Connecticut, on Friday morning. According to nursing home staff, the event happened inside the woman's room at about eleven in the morning. The husband then shot himself to death after the shooting. At the scene, both were declared deceased.
The deceased's names have not yet been made public by the police. Officials said that the public is not in danger and that the situation is under control.
The woman had been a frequent visitor to Apple Rehab, having lived there for a number of years. Situated on Berlin Road, the assisted living facility focuses on offering nursing and rehabilitation services. When the assault happened, the victim was alone herself in her room. There were no witnesses to the shooting and no involvement from other residents or staff members.
Apple Rehab's vice president of operations, Michael Landi, verified the unfortunate incident in a statement. The safety and well-being of the staff and residents continue to be their top priorities, he said, expressing his profound grief at the circumstances. According to Landi, there had been no reported threats before, and it's still unknown why the shooting occurred.
The nursing home personnel contacted 911, and emergency crews showed there shortly after. Since then, Apple Rehab has provided staff and residents with counseling services to assist in overcoming the terrible experience. Police are still examining the site even as the facility is starting to reopen for business.
Police tape roped off a vehicle in the parking lot, and officials barred the facility’s entrance for many hours. As a precaution, the daycare center next door, KinderCare, went into lockdown. The lockdown was verified by staff, but no more occurrences have been reported.
Officials stated that at this moment, no further information is available. To look into the situation, they are collaborating closely with state investigators and the Cromwell Police Department.
