For the second time in 2024, Jasprit Bumrah rose to the world no. 1 rank in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test bowler ranking on Wednesday (October 1) as the Indian pacer replaced veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the top spot.

The star Indian bowlers exchanged places in the rankings, with Bumrah now in the top spot and Ashwin just behind him in second place. The duo are in a tight contest with each other to be the top-ranked bowler in the world, with Bumrah (870) just one point ahead of Ashwin (869).

Ashwin took to Instagram and reacted to Bumrah replacing him in the top spot with a three-word post. 'You belong here,' the 38-year-old wrote on his Instagram story while hailing the World No. 1 Test bowler.

Both Ashwin and Bumrah finished as the joint-highest wicket-takers in the recently concluded series between India and Bangladesh. Both took 11 wickets each as the home team whitewashed the visitors 2-0 and put one foot in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Ashwin was awarded the Player of the Series (POTS) award as he also scored a vital century with the bat in the Chennai Test.

Ashwin finished wicketless in the first inning of the series opener before taking a six-wicket haul in the second outing. Later, he took two wickets in the first innings of the Kanpur Test and followed it up with a three-wicket haul.

Bumrah started the series with a four-wicket haul in the Chennai Test, while he got just one scalp in the second innings of the first Test. On the other hand, he took three wickets each in both outings during the Kanpur Test.

Bumrah remains the only Indian pacer in history to top the ICC Test Bowlers rankings. Before him, Kapil Dev's second spot in 1979-80 was the highest position a fast bowler from India gathered in the rankings.
