Dispur: A biker, named Saddam Hussain was chased and mauled to death by a rhino near the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district on Sunday. The 37-year-old, Hussain was riding his two-wheeler when the rhino, who had strolled out of the wildlife sanctuary charged at him. The video of the incident soon went viral, showing the man quickly getting down from his bike and running into an open field, chased by the animal that can run up to 55 kilometres an hour.

Rhino chases Assam biker
The victim, a resident of Sonapur Kachutali in the Kamrup (Metro) district, was travelling from Mayong to Chamata when the attack occurred near Haduk Bridge. Hussain was later found with his head fatally injured in the field.
Nayan Jyoti Das, the Forest Range Officer of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, confirmed the fatality and stated, “The rhino came out of the wildlife sanctuary. We are investigating the incident.”

According to data released on World Rhino Day, India’s one-horned rhino population has nearly tripled in the last four decades, rising from 1,500 to over 4,000. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, situated in the suburbs of Assam’s capital, Guwahati, holds the highest density of one-horned rhinos in India.
The adult Indian rhino, the largest of the three Asian species, can live for up to 50 years. National Park in Assam hosts about 80 percent of the world’s one-horned rhinos.
