'keep gods away from politics': supreme court on tirupati laddu row

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today pulled up the Andhra Pradesh government for sharing information about its probe into the allegations of animal fat in prasadam at the Andhra Pradesh temple and said the ones holding constitutional posts should keep away gods from politics. “This is not a matter of a lakh but sentiments of crores of devotees,” it said.

A bench of Justice Viswanathan also hit out at the state government for trying to play politics over the issue. "You should have waited for the SIT finding. The report prime facie indicates that this is not the material used in the preparation of prasadam," the bench said.

"Why went to the press before SIT report came," asked the court.

Citing that the issue was sensitive for crores of devotees, a bench of Justice Viswanathan questioned on what proof the government had to show that contaminated ghee was used in preparation of laddus. "This is not a matter of a lakh but sentiments of crores of devotees. We expect the gods to be kept way from politics," it said.

On his part, former Attorney General of India Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for the Andhra government, said that the petitions are not bonafide. "Its just an attempt to save earlier government and malign present," he argued.
