A new study warns that poor nutrition, particularly a deficiency in vitamin D, can make injuries in children far more problematic than usual and significantly slow down the healing process. The findings shed light on the important role of vitamin D in bone health and emphasize the need for proper nutrition to ensure efficient recovery from injuries like broken bones.

Presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2024 National Conference & Exhibition, the study was led by Dr Jessica McQuerry, who, along with her team, examined 186 cases of extremity fractures in children from 2015 to 2022. The results revealed a stark difference in the healing times between children with sufficient vitamin D levels and those with deficiencies. Children with low levels of vitamin D took considerably longer to heal from fractures, highlighting the significant role this nutrient plays in recovery.

Key Findings from the Study

For leg fractures that did not require surgery, children with low vitamin D levels needed an additional 20 days, or almost three extra weeks, for clinical healing compared to their peers with normal vitamin D levels. The differences were even more pronounced when looking at radiographic healing—the time it takes for fractures to appear healed on X-rays. Children with vitamin D deficiencies required two months longer for radiographic healing than those with sufficient vitamin D.

The situation worsened for children who underwent surgery. Clinical healing in vitamin D-deficient children took an extra month, while radiographic healing lagged by almost four months compared to those with normal vitamin D levels.

The study shows the vital role of vitamin D in the bone healing process, particularly in children. Dr McQuerry emphasized the importance of a well-balanced diet rich in vitamin D to support children’s overall health and development. "Proper nutrition, especially adequate vitamin D intake, is essential for optimal bone healing and growth in children," she noted.

Vitamin D is crucial for bone health because it aids in calcium absorption, which strengthens bones and promotes faster healing. Fortunately, many foods are fortified with vitamin D, including dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt, as well as certain fish and breakfast cereals. However, sunlight remains one of the most efficient ways for the body to produce vitamin D. Encouraging children to spend time outdoors not only promotes physical activity but also boosts vitamin D levels naturally.

This study serves as a reminder for parents and healthcare providers to pay closer attention to children's nutrition, especially in cases of injury, to ensure a smoother and faster recovery process.
