the great indian kapil show season 2 episode 2 review: saif's boredom, ntr-janhvi's forced laughs cook a bland north-south recipe

The second episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show has premiered on Netflix. Saif Ali Khan, Jr NTR and Janhvi Kapoor are the guests as they promote their pan-India action thriller,Devara. When the North meets the South, does it cook a delicious flavourful meal? Let’s find out!

Saif Ali Khan’s boredom can’t be ignored

The Great Indian Kapil Show is the OTT version of the superhit The Kapil Sharma Show which aired on television over the weekend. The second season has taken the bar lower. The jokes and gags no longer work. In a bid to make it grander than the first season, the original essence of the show is lost. Saif Ali Khan’s expressions throughout the episode indicated that he is finding the jokes unfunny. Putting up a fake smile, the actor sails through it. His wittiness and charm are weighed down by the boring and bland episode.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4vitovt7ps

Promotional stunt over candidness

The episode begins on a heavily promotional note. Saif and NTR make entries with background dancers. Janhvi Kapoor arrives on stage after the actors mention their mutual admiration for the actress’ mother Sridevi. Candidness takes a backseat. The camaraderie between the trio gives a sense of distance and discomfort.

Jr NTR, Janhvi’s sincere attempts to elevate the show’s mood

Jr NTR, known for his liveliness and charismatic presence, leaves an impact. Be it through a handful of genuine laughs or displaying his mimicry prowess, he does try to hold the audience’s attention. Credit must go to Janhvi who sportingly plays a game which was meant to be funny but ends up dull. Her spontaneous reactions are a hit.

Can we move on from social media comments?

The USP ofThe Kapil Sharma Show was the host reading out hilarious social media comments below celebrities’ Instagram posts. With time, this idea has become stale. Saif’s expressions say it all that nasty and insulting comments don’t deserve attention.

What works is…

When the trio sits down to talk with Kapil Sharma, the episode soars. Janhvi’s relevation of her father Boney Kapoor adapting to the South culture and her mother Sridevi fighting like North Indians to Saif hinting at Ibrahim Ali Khan’s debut, that’s something fresh and interesting.
