punjab: patiala law university closed till further order as student protest against vc continues

With students refusing to call off the protest against VC, the authorities of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) have issued notice to close the institution. The University will be shut till further orders. This announcement comes a day after a few female students held a protest against the vice-chancellor of the University for allegedly violating their privacy at the girls hostel.

The protesting students have claimed that the vice-chancellor conducted a surprise check of the girls' hostel on Sunday. While checking, he also questioned the dressing sense of the girls. Offended students staged a 'dharna' outside his residence, which is at the University campus. The students refused to move from there and spent the night in front of the VC's house, demanding his resignation.

Reports claim that the talks between agitating students and the university officials could not yield any result. PTI reports that University security guards barricaded the main gates and no outsider was allowed to enter the university premises.

Why are students protesting?

The students believe that any male member (be it VC or a teacher) should not be allowed to enter the rooms of female students. Students said male member should not be around even if he is accompanied by female faculty members or guards. One of the protesting student said, “This act is a complete disregard for the integrity and privacy of the female students.”

The students have claimed that this was not the first time that VC has passed sexist comments. Local media reports a female student saying, "It has happened before as well and he once told that women should only learn how to cook to live happily after marriage." In contrary to this, while having conversation with IE reporter, the VC denied any such claims. He clarified that his intent of visiting the hostel was to identify students who smoke and drink alcohol after midnight. He further said that it was decided after receiving multiple complaints from students. He said, "There was no other way to identify such students. I went inside with female wardens, not alone."

As of now, there is no update of the reopening date. Students are advised to be in touch with University for not missing updates.
