babar azam, shan masood join gary kirsten & jason gillespie in connection camp; 'lack of unity' discussed

The much-debated lack of unity in the Pakistan Cricket Team has reportedly been given some weightage after it was discussed in the recent connection camp organised by the board, which ended on Monday. According to officials, the camp was an effort to bring Pakistan Cricket out of the misery it has put itself in over the last 10 months.

Officials and the team management, including both head coaches Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten, described a day of open conversations at the camp which also included Babar Azam, Shan Masood and a few other cricketers.

The camp was organised after Pakistan went through a massive upheaval on the field, having failed to qualify for the knockouts of the 2023 ODI World Cup, not being able to get out of the group stage at the T20 World Cup in June, and more recently, losing a Test series 0-2 to Bangladesh at home.

Rumours have been going around for a while that all is not well within the Pakistan team and the idea was fuelled more when Shaheen Shah Afridi was removed as the T20I captain after just one series and Babar was reinstated.

"The session was about this, that we openly and candidly accept and identify [issues] and ask for a commitment from each other, demand it, on how we can improve our performances and how we work together as a team," the board's chief operating officer Salman Naseer told the media in Lahore.

The CEO didn't go into the specific details of the topics discussed in the camp but said that the aim is to provide a 'safe space' to all concerned parties to allay their concerns. But issues between players and the PCB are reportedly increasing especially after some of them weren't handed NOCs to go and play in foreign T20 leagues.
