explained: how lando norris can beat max verstappen to f1 2024 driver's championship title after singapore win

The 2024 Formula One (F1) Driver's Championship race took a major twist on Sunday (September 22) after Lando Norris won the Singapore Grand Prix, with defending champion Max Verstappen finishing second and Oscar Piastri taking the third spot.

With Mclaren once again getting two of the three podium spots, they have built a healthy lead over Red Bull on the Championship Table and are heading towards their first constructors title in 23 years and their fifth in history.

However, the Driver's Championship race has taken an interesting turn, with Norris closing the gap on Verstappen. While the three-time World Champion seemed to have a big lead and a fourth title seemed certain, that is not the case anymore.

How Does F1 2024 Driver's Champions Table Look Like After Singapore GP?

It is worth noting that while Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri are still in the race to win the title; it is nothing more than a mathematical chance with Norris having the only realistic shot at the title. As things stand, Verstappen is on top spot with 331 points while Norris is 52 points behind (279).

Can Lando Norris Win The Title?

With six races left which include two sprint races (Brazil and Qatar), it means that a driver can win a maximum of 172 points (including fastest lap) till the end of the season. Norris needs to make up a difference of 8.6 points per race over Verstappen to win the title.

Races Left In F1 2024 Season

Race Date Sprint Race
United States GP October 20 No
Mexican GP October 27 No
Brazalian GP November 3 Yes
Las Vegas GP November 24 No
Qatari GP December 1 Yes
Abu Dhabi GP December 8 No

The situation is still not in Norris’ hands as even if he wins all six races and takes maximum points in the two sprint races but Verstappen finishes second in each race, the Red Bull driver will win a fourth World Championship title.

However, the situation could turn on his head if Verstappen fails to get points in one race and has a DNF. In this scenario, Lando will still not win the title if Max finished second in every other race. The English driver will need Max to finish outside the podium place in at least once while winning all races.

Ultimately, Lando still needs a miracle to lift the title and Verstappen not defending his crown will be among the greatest upsets in F1 history.
