Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins was fatally shot in the courthouse on Thursday, local media outlets reported. According to The Mountain Eagle, a sheriff has been arrested in connection to the incident. The outlet further adds that the sheriff has been reported as Mickey Stines. Letcher County Schools in the area were placed in lockdown. Students were asked to go home.
Officials did not confirm if anyone else was injured during the incident, or the motive behind the shooting. The courthouse had been placed on lockdown but since lifted, and an investigation is underway.

According to Ballotpedia, Judge Mullins was appointed by Governor Steve Beshear in December 2009 and was elected the following year. He was re-elected without opposition in 2014, winning another four-year term that expired on January 6, 2019.

Ballotpedia further states that Mullins earned a BA degree from the University of Kentucky and went on to receive his JD from the University of Louisville. He was admitted to the bar in 1995. Prior to his appointment as Letcher County District Judge, he was an assistant commonwealth's attorney in Letcher County.
