aap’s counter-suggestion for one nation, one election ‘elections should held every month…’

New Delhi: A day after the Union Cabinet cleared the proposal for simultaneous elections across the country, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar called for holding elections every month. The AAP leader said that holding elections every month will ensure that leaders remain accountable towards the voters.

Opposing 'One Nation, One Election', Kakkar said, "One nation one elections should not be implemented in the country, infact, elections should be held every month so that they remain accountable to the people…If BJP can actually conduct elections across the country together, it should hold the elections for Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi first."

"The country needs one nation one education, to ensure similar education is given to a poor child as is given to a rich child. The country also needs one nation one treatment, so that there is no disparity in treatment," she added.

Centre Clears ONOE Proposal

The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of ‘One Nation, One Election’, aligning polls for both the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Wednesday. He said that the proposal was unanimously approved by the cabinet. ‘One nation, One election’ is one of the key promises made by the BJP in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

A high-level panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind in March this year recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days. The panel has also recommended the preparation of a common electoral roll and voter ID cards by the Election Commission of India in consultation with state election authorities.

Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc parties have opposed the idea of simultaneous polls. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said, “We don't stand with this. One Nation One Election cannot work in a democracy. Elections need to be held as and when required if we want our democracy to survive.”
