New Delhi: The national capital woke up to probably its biggest political news this year on Sunday as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would resign from his post within the next 48 hours. Reacting to the resignation bid, Kejriwal’s lookalike, Sanjeev Singhal, said, “The people of Delhi are shocked and upset with Arvind Kejriwal’s decision to resign.” He also expressed optimism, stating that 10 years ago, when Kejriwal stepped down, he came back with an even greater majority, winning 63 seats, and this time, he will “win all 70 assembly seats” in the upcoming elections.

"Arvind Kejriwal was also forced to resign during his 49-day government because he was not being allowed to work. After resigning as CM after 49 days, the people of Delhi gave him 63 seats. This time, he will win all 70 Assembly constituencies," Singhal told PTI.

The decision to resign came two days after he was released from Tihar jail after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the Delhi excise policy case. Addressing a gathering, Kejriwal stated that he won't sit on the CM Chair even for a minute if the public deems him corrupt. He framed his resignation as a response to the allegations made against him and a dedication to upholding his democratic principles.

Responding to the questions raised on why he stayed in office despite the legal proceedings against him, the Delhi CM said, "People have asked why I didn’t step down as Chief Minister while I was in jail. My answer is that I wanted to safeguard the constitution."

He also urged non-BJP Chief Ministers to remain in office under similar conditions, noting the need to defend democracy and maintain integrity. Announcing the resignation, he said, "If the people of Delhi believe I am corrupt, then I will not sit on the CM’s chair for even a minute."

He further challenged the legitimacy of the allegations against him, stating, "I am giving my Agni Pariksha. Just as Sita faced her trial, I am here to face mine."

Arvind Kejriwal also called for an early election, demanding they be held in November instead of February. "We will decide in our meeting over the next two days who will take over until then," he further added, stressing that until the elections, another AAP member would be temporarily taking over as the Chief Minister of Delhi.
