Faridabad: In an incident where civic apathy turned fatal for two men who lost their lives after their car got stuck in a waterlogged Old Faridabad Railway underpass. The underpass was heavily flooded following incessant rain that has been lashing the city and adjoining area for the past two days.
According to the information, Manager Punashreya Sharma and cashier Birak Dwivedi were on their way from Gurugram, when their SUV got trapped in a waterlogged underpass leading to their deaths.
The families of the victims are now asking why there were no barricades if the underpass was severely waterlogged. The incident happened at 11 pm last night.
According to the information, the two bank employees managed to get out of car but they could not swim and drowned. The first body was recovered minutes after the incident, while the other was brought out of the flooded underpass at 5 am. Police carried out rescue op to locate his body
Faridabad underpass waterlogged
Additional SHO Nit 5 Police Station, Jai Chand said that due to heavy rain, there was waterlogging in the underpass. "The two persons who were present in the car were not able to make a judgement and they drove the car inside the underpass…One person was rescued and taken to the hospital where he was declared dead by the doctors. The other person was rescued in the morning…" he said.
"Police tried to stop them but they ignored our instructions…One among them was a branch manager at HDFC Bank in sector 31 in Gurugram and the other was a cashier" he added.
Waterlogged underpasses and roads have been a serious concern for the people across Delhi-NCR with several cases of deaths coming forth in the last few months. The death of three students at a coaching centre basement due to flooding led to massive outrage and the case was even handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Last month, a 7-year-old boy fell into an open drain in the Ashok Vihar area which led to his death. As per the information, the child was passing through the area when he fell into an open drain. The boy's parents are labourers who are devastated by the incident.
The family, unable to find to child, filed a missing complaint in the afternoon. It was in the evening when the family member came to know that the child was no more because he slipped and fell into the drain. The residents have been telling that they have been complaining to the MCD not just once but several times to close these drains as the entire street gets flooded whenever it rains.

Days ago, a man drowned in a stormwater drain while out for a nature's call in Gurugram. The 44-year-old had stopped to relieve himself. The drain, maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), was covered with cement slabs in most areas but was open near the Ghamroj toll plaza, where the incident occurred. A case of negligence was filed against the NHAI.
