elderly woman tied to pole, beaten after son's inter-caste marriage in andhra pradesh

Kurnool: A 55-year-old woman was allegedly tied to a pole and was severely thrashed around midnight on Thursday over her son’s intercaste marriage, which took place a few months ago at Kalukunta village in Peddakadubura Mandal in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. The woman was severely injured and her dress was also ripped off completely. The police later rescued her and admitted her to a government hospital in Yemminganur where she is currently undergoing treatment.

According to the Senior Inspector (Peddakaduburu) Niranjan Reddy, the victim, Govindamma used to live with her children, including two sons Eeranna and Raju, and a daughter in the SC colony of Kalukunta village. Earlier this year, according to the TOI report, her elder son Eeranna and his girlfriend approached the Yemmiganur police and got married in the presence of police as they both were adults.

Following the outrage sparked by their inter-caste marriage, Govindamma's family faced forced expulsion from the village around February this year. While Eeranna and his wife moved to Bengaluru, where they've been living since Govindamma and her younger son Raju relocated to Yemmiganur town.

However, when Govindamma returned to the village for personal reasons on Thursday, members of the girl's family, upon learning of her presence, confronted her and brutally assaulted her. They locked her son Raju in a room and tied Govindamma to a pole, subjecting her to repeated beatings. Her clothes were torn, and the power supply to the village was cut off as they continued the assault.

Hours later, Raju managed to alert the Peddakaduburu police, who swiftly responded and rescued Govindamma. A case has been registered against the ten individuals. Further investigation is underway and soon they will be arrested, said SI Reddy.
