us company fires indian-origin lawyer over 'inappropriate relationship' with ceo

An Indian-origin lawyer was fired over an alleged "inappropriate workplace relationship" with the CEO of her company in the United States. Nabanita Nag was terminated from her role as Chief Legal Officer at Norfolk Southern Corporation, Atlanta, following an investigation into allegations of a consensual relationship with her boss, Alan Shaw. Shaw was also dismissed after the accusations.

While the relationship was consensual, it violated the company’s policies and code of ethics, according to Norfolk Southern Corporation in a press release. The officials were fired "in connection with preliminary findings from an ongoing investigation that determined Shaw violated company policies by engaging in a consensual relationship with the company’s chief legal officer, Nag."

The company also stated that Shaw’s termination was unrelated to Norfolk’s performance, financial reporting, or operational results.

Nabanita Nag describes herself on her LinkedIn profile as a "seasoned leader" with experience working for three Fortune 300 public companies and previously at Goldman Sachs. She was appointed Chief Legal Officer in 2022 and became Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs in 2023. Nag initially joined Norfolk Southern in 2020 as General Counsel.

Nag holds a bachelor's degree in Government and English from Georgetown University, and a Juris Doctor (JD) from New York University School of Law.

Following the recent sackings, Mark R. George, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, has been appointed as President and CEO.
