Will Rohit Sharma leave Mumbai Indians (MI) or will he stay with the team which he led to five IPL title wins? MI made a bold call before the IPL 2024 season by removing Rohit from captaincy. He was replaced by Hardik Pandya. MI had their worst-ever season in IPL's history and they finished at the last spot in the points table.
With Rohit leading India to a title win in the 2024 T20 World Cup, he would want captaincy in the IPL too. MI might not reappoint him as captain since they brought Hardik back to MI after two memorable seasons with Gujarat Titans (GT).
A clear word on Rohit's future with MI will only be out a few months after the BCCI announces the rules for retention. Before the BCCI's announcement, Aakash Chopra made a bold prediction and said that Rohit Sharma's journey with Mumbai Indians is over.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former India opener said: "Will he stay or will he go? It's a big question. Personally, I feel he will not stay. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings' story is very different but Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him."
"Anything can happen but I don't think Rohit is going to be retained here. I don't have any information but I feel Rohit will probably be released. He might go to someone in the trade window, that's a possibility that he doesn't go to the auction, but if that doesn't happen, he might be seen in the auction. I feel his journey with the Mumbai Indians is over," he added.
Rohit joined MI in the IPL 2011 mega-auction. He was named MI's captain during IPL 2013. Rohit did the unthinkable and propelled MI to their maiden IPL title in his very first season. MI emulated their heroics and lifted the IPL 2015 trophy.

They won three more titles (in 2017, 2019 and 2020) under Rohit. MI's failure to win a title after IPL 2020 saw the owners take a big call and they brought Hardik back to MI. Hardik's return to MI led to Rohit's removal from captaincy.
