delhi govt imposes complete ban on manufacturing, storing, sale of firecrackers till jan 1

New Delhi: The Delhi government announced on Monday a comprehensive ban on the production, sale, and use of firecrackers in the national capital to combat air pollution during the upcoming winter season.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai stated that the ban is crucial to address the seasonal increase in air pollution exacerbated by firecrackers. "There is a significant risk of heightened air pollution in Delhi during winter, and the burning of firecrackers further worsens this issue," Rai explained.

"In light of this situation, like last year, we are imposing a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of all types of firecrackers, so that people can be protected from pollution. There will also be a complete ban on the online sale and delivery of any kind of firecrackers," he added. Rai said, "To avoid any confusion, this ban applies to all types of firecrackers. The ban will remain in effect in Delhi until January 1, 2025, to provide relief to Delhiites from the pollution caused by burning firecrackers."

The government is also developing a 'Winter Action Plan' that targets 21 key areas to control pollution. This plan will involve various campaigns and close collaboration with citizens to ensure its effectiveness.

Rai urged Delhi residents to celebrate festivals with lamps and sweets instead of firecrackers, advocating for a collective effort to reduce pollution and protect the environment. "If every citizen becomes a 'Pollution Warrior,' we can mitigate the health risks associated with air pollution," Rai said.

An action plan will be prepared in collaboration with the Delhi Police, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department to strictly implement the ban, he added.

In another news, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced recently that the government will implement a 21-point Winter Action Plan to combat air pollution, featuring real-time drone monitoring of pollution hotspots and the creation of a special task force to tackle worsening air quality during the colder months. Speaking at a press conference following a high-level meeting with representatives from 35 departments, Gopal Rai emphasised that the government is adopting a proactive approach this year.

"This year, for the first time, we will be using drones to monitor pollution at 13 major hotspots across Delhi. A special task force will also be formed to tackle air pollution more effectively. These measures are part of our 21-point plan to ensure a cleaner winter for the residents of Delhi," Gopal Rai said.
