surprise swap: quad summit moves to new york amid pm modi's us trip; india will host in 2025, say sources

The upcoming Quad Summit is scheduled to take place in New York, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States, sources said Saturday. India and the US have reportedly agreed to swap hosting duties for the summit. As a result, the US will host this year's Quad Summit, while India will take over the hosting of the 2025 summit. The summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi was postponed in January 2024.

Sources confirm that the upcoming Quad Summit in New York will feature US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. This summit will coincide with PM Modi's visit to New York for the UN Summit of the Future, the UN General Assembly, and a diaspora event.

The scheduling of this summit has been challenging for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) due to conflicts with election dates and travel schedules.

India initially planned the summit for January 27, 2024, but faced delays after Biden declined the invitation due to his presidential campaign. The summit was then postponed, partly due to India's election schedule and Japan's LDP elections. Kishida will now attend the Quad Summit and the UN Summit of the Future before returning to Japan for the LDP elections on September 27.

The summit’s agenda will cover key issues such as maritime security, critical technologies, cyber security, humanitarian aid, health security, climate change, counterterrorism, infrastructure, connectivity, and sustainable financing practices. This agenda was outlined during a meeting of the four foreign ministers in Japan on July 29.
