In yet another feather to his cap, veteran filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli will be honoured with lifetime achievement award at the ongoing 10th Jaffna International Cinema Festival.

The Kannada filmmaker, who has fourteen National Film Awards to his credit is in Sri Lanka, attending the cinema festival.

Masterclass by Girish Kasaravalli

The Jaffna International Cinema Festival, which began on September 3 is celebrating Girish Kasaravalli’s impact on the film industry by screening four of his films.

In addition to the award, a master class led by Girish Kasaravalli is being held for students at Jaffna University. The event will be hosted by Ankuran Dutta, Professor at Gauhati University and Director of the Vivekananda Culture Center at the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka.

Girish Kasaravalli will attend the closing ceremony of the festival on September 9 to receive his award. The recognition highlights his enduring legacy and commitment to creating high-quality, uncompromising cinema.

Celebration of Ghatashraddha

Recently, the timeless classic National Film Award-winning Kannada film Ghatashraddha, directed by Girish Kasaravalli was screened at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. It became the first Kannada film to be showcased at the prestigious event.

Directed by Kasaravalli at just 26, Ghatashraddha was a trendsetter in Kannada cinema for its rich visual and narrative depth.

Ghatashraddha is recognised as one of the top 20 Indian classics by the Directorate of Films, selected during the centenary of Indian cinema in 2009.

The film garnered international admiration, with Hollywood giants like Martin Scorsese and George Lucas partnering to restore the film. The film’s renovation was supported by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur’s film heritage foundation, known for its work on Celluloid Man.
