trial against spin: shubman gill reveals how he is looking to improve his test performance

Ace India batter Shubman Gill has said that during the off-season, he worked on his defence a little bit more against spinners. India will play five Tests at home in the next two months, which means the youngster will have to endure a lot of spin bowlers in the upcoming Test season. India's batters have recently struggled with spin, as was visible during their white-ball tour of Sri Lanka last month.

Gill made close to 500 runs in the home series against England this year in, perhaps, his best-sustained outing in Tests till now and now he wants to build on that from the two-match series against Bangladesh, beginning September 19.

The first Test will be played in Chennai, a haven for spinners. Bangladesh, with the veteran Shakib al Hasan and an experienced Mehidy Hasan Miraz in their ranks, might pose problems for the Indian batters.

“I worked on my defence a little bit more against spinners. You should be able to defend a lot more when you are playing on a turning track against spinners, then you can play the scoring shots,” Gill was quoted as saying by PTI.

“With more T20s being played…I won’t say on flat tracks but on batting-friendly tracks, I think it takes away a little bit of your defensive game. So, that was my focus in the England series,” Gill added.

Unlike in white-ball formats where the youngster is a strong force, he is yet to blaze the Test arena and he hopes for a change in fortunes very soon.

“In Test cricket, my performance has not matched my expectations so far. But we are going to play 10 Test matches this season and when I look back after those 10 Tests, hopefully, my expectations will be matched," Gill said.

The youngster has played two Tests in Chennai, with scores of 29, 50, 0 and 14 against England back in 2021.
