Caviar with vodka or blinis? Or how about caviar as a skincare ingredient? While searching for skincare products, I recently came across the luxurious yet pricey Caviar Collection by La Prairie Switzerland. It includes products like Skin Caviar Eye Lift, Mist, Eye Cream, and more! Well, looks like Caviar does work well for the skin.
For those who love eating Caviar but are cringing at the thought of applying it to their skin, please relax—it doesn't involve squishing and smearing tiny black, orange or gold fish eggs on your face. There's no fishy smell either. However, these products might be even more expensive than actual Caviar! For those who don't know, Caviar is the unfertilised eggs (roe) of a large fish called the sturgeon. It's a delicacy, especially popular among the wealthy and elite.
It is the Caviar Extract that is used as an ingredient in skincare products and is known to be an anti-ageing and moisturising agent. "Caviar extract is an emollient active ingredient, primarily benefiting the skin by boosting hydration, moisture levels, and plumping of fine lines, while reducing inflammation and protecting against oxidative damage thanks to its antioxidant properties—notably vitamin E and selenium," explained board-certified dermatologist Dr. Deanne Mraz Robinson in an article for Byrdie.
Some of the benefits of caviar include improving overall skin texture, protecting against UV rays, preventing elastin breakdown, boosting collagen production, and reducing inflammation.
Benefits of Caviar Skincare
Great Moisturiser: It reduces dryness and flaky skin as the Omega-3s improve the skin’s barrier and lock in moisture. It also plumps the skin.
Fabulous Anti-Ageing Properties: It helps boost collagen and ceramide production in skin cells. A study titled Investigating the Anti-Aging Effects of Caviar Oil on Human Skin states, "In vitro, caviar oil enhanced adipocyte differentiation and increased lipid accumulation inside the cells." This showcased the potential of caviar oil in mitigating skin ageing and holds promise for application in anti-ageing products.
Protection Against UV Rays and Improving Skin Texture: Caviar extract contains “antioxidants that can protect against dangerous UVA and UVB rays, helping to minimise wrinkles and tighten the skin," dermatologist Dr Cameron Rokhsar told Well + Good.
However, while it has all the goodness for skincare, caviar extract is not recommended for those with oily or acne-prone skin.
