sandip ghosh, ex-principal of kolkata's rg kar hospital, arrested by cbi

Kolkata: Former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged financial irregularities. Ghosh was taken into custody after a two-week questioning session over the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case. The hospital’s former deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali had lodged complaints of financial irregularities against the hospital during Ghosh’s tenure as principal. Three other people were also arrested in connection with the financial fraud case.

The CBI has reportedly charged the ex-principal of the RG Kar Hospital with criminal conspiracy and cheating. He was also charged with Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with the financial irregularities case.

The former principal of RG Kar Hospital was questioned by the CBI at its Salt Lake office in connection with the alleged rape and murder of the post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. He was later taken to CBI's Nizam Palace office in Kolkata.

Notably, the CBI is also investigating Ghosh's role in the Kolkata rape-murder case. The Supreme Court handed over the financial irregularities case involving Ghosh to the federal probe agency. On August 25, the CBI conducted raids at his residence.

The agency also came across documents related to an inquiry committee report related to the disposal of biomedical waste at RG Kar. Ex-hospital staffer Tarak Chatterjee had told Times Now about the biomedical waste and dead body smuggling. Former staffer, Akhtar Ali, also alleged that Sandip Ghosh sold dead bodies and removed all the records so that nobody could know about his wrongdoings. Ghosh was also accused of charging money for autopsies which are done free of cost as per the rules.

"He's a criminal, not a doctor. He's ruined many students' lives….He runs a mafia raj. He has ruined many lives, taught students to consume alcohol and he even sold unclaimed dead bodies and tampered with death records and removed the registers so that nobody comes to know about it," he said while speaking to Times Now.

The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered by a civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy on August 9. Roy was arrested on August 10. The case sparked nationwide protests by doctors.
