northeast united create history with durand cup title victory, controversy surrounds mohun bagan penalty

NorthEast United FC etched their name in Indian football history by clinching the Durand Cup title, defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a thrilling penalty shootout at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. This was after NorthEast showed remarked resilience and came back from a two-goal deficit. The match ended in a 2-2 draw after regulation time, forcing the decider.

However, the penalty shootout that followed was marred by controversy. Mohun Bagan's Jason Cummings missed his penalty attempt. Despite the ball clearly going over, the referee ordered a retake, much to the dismay of NorthEast United players and fans.

The retake was allowed because NEUFC keeper Gurmeet had stepped in front of his line too early.

But this did not deter the away team, which ultimately won the game 4-3 on penalties.

This was also NorthEast United's first major silverware in the club’s history.
