David Bates, a Georgia police officer, was seriously injured after crashing his motorcycle during Vice President Kamala Harris' motorcade in Savannah, the local police department said in a statement on Thursday. The incident took place around 7 PM EDT. Officials said it was a 'single-vehicle accident' and no other vehicle was involved.
According to the police department, Bates was taken to a local hospital, Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he was undergoing treatment on Thursday. He is in stable condition.

“The Savannah Police Department is supporting Corporal Bates and his family as he begins his recovery from injuries sustained in this vehicle accident. We will be by his side every step of the way,” Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther said in a statement.
Fox News cited a member of the press pool to report that the officer lost control, but did not hit anyone. Witnesses said that Bates was seen lying on the ground of I-516, in what appeared to be a pool of blood. Other officers at the scene tended to him.

Frederick Houston, a special agent in charge of the Secret Service's Atlanta office, said the agency 'is aware of an incident that occurred during a motorcade movement yesterday'. “The movement was not affected by the incident. We are thankful for the support of our law enforcement partners and wish Corporal David Bates a full and speedy recovery,” Houston added in the Secret Service's press release.
The accident took place as Harris and her running mate Tim Walz were on a two-day bus tour through southeast Georgia.
