novak djokovic nears historic feat, 8 wins shy of most victories in us open; records 90 wins in all 4 majors

Novak Djokovic is on the cusp of achieving another landmark. The former World number 1 recorded his 90th win in US Open history, and with it, he became the first male player to record 90 wins at all four majors. Apart from the milestone Novak achieved on Thursday, August 29, he is also closing in on the record for most victories in the history of the US Open.

The Serbian advanced to the third round of the US Open 2024 after his opponent Laslo Djere had to retire in the third game due to injury, although the no. 2 seed was already leading 6-4, 6-4, 2-0.

Djere was leading 4-2 in the second set when he appeared to be troubled by pain near his hip and was visited by a trainer later in the set. He finished that set, which lasted 69 minutes after the first one went 60 but didn't last much longer.

Novak Djokovic marched into the third round, and with his latest victory, the 24-time major champion racked up the 90th win of his career in US Open history. He is the first male player to win a total of 90 matches in all four Tennis majors.

Currently, Djokovic has 94 wins at the Australian Open, 96 wins at the French Open aka Roland Garros, 97 wins at the prestigious Wimbledon and 90 at the US Open.

Furthermore, the 37-year-old Belgrade-born superstar is closing in on Jimmy Connors' record for most wins in US Open history. With 8 more wins, Djokovic will level Connors and another win will make him the most successful player in the history of the tournament.

In his next outing, Novak Djokovic will face No. 28 seed Alexei Popyrin on Friday. While it seems difficult that the 'Djokernole' will be able to surpass Connors this year, given the fitness, form and consistency he has shown, one wouldn't rule him out of contention for surpassing the record next year.
