History of Tiger's Nest Monastery
The Tiger’s Nest Monastery, officially called Paro Takstang, was built in 1692 around the cave where Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Buddhism in Bhutan, meditated. The monastery’s name is a reference to the legend that Guru Rinpoche was carried to the site on the back of a tigress.
Today, Tiger's Nest consists of four temples and monastic residences. Despite the constant influx of tourists, it remains a functioning monastery, offering a glimpse into Bhutan's rich Buddhist heritage.
All About Tiger's Nest Trek
Tiger’s Nest Monastery is located approximately 10 miles north of Paro, making Paro the ideal base for your visit. Plan for a full day for your Tiger’s Nest excursion. The round-trip hike typically takes 4-5 hours, with an additional hour for exploring the monastery. A leisurely lunch at the nearby cafeteria is a great way to refuel. Aim to depart Paro around 8 AM and return to your hotel by 3 PM.
The only way to reach Tiger's Nest is on foot. There are no roads leading directly to the monastery. However, if you're unable to hike the entire distance, you can hire a horse to carry you part of the way. The hike begins at the car park, where you'll also find souvenir vendors and hiking pole rentals.
Halfway up the trail, you'll reach a level area with prayer wheels and the Takstang Cafeteria. This is a popular spot for a break and offers stunning views of the monastery.

Note: Backpacks, photography equipment, and shoes are not allowed inside the monastery. You’ll need to leave these items with security staff at the entrance.
Timings of Tiger's Nest Monastery: 8:00 to 13:00; 14:00 to 18:00 (this is for entry into the Tiger’s Nest Monastery only). However, you can’t start before 8am.
