Kolkata: In a big development in the ongoing probe and actions into the Kolkara rape and murder case, the membership of the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, has been suspended by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
The disciplinary committee duly constituted by the National President Dr RV Asokan, IMA HQs has unanimously decided to suspend the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, Vice President, IMA Calcutta Branch.
In an official statement, the IMA said that the committee suo moto considered the rape and murder of a postgraduate resident and the subsequent developments in RG Kar Medical College Kolkata.
"The undersigned along with the National President had also visited the parents of the victim in their home.
They had put up their grievances against you in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them," the statement read.
IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations of doctors had demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by "you to the profession on the whole", the committee said in the note.

"The disciplinary committee of IMA HQs has unanimously decided to suspend you forthwith from the membership of Indian Medical Association," it added.
This comes amid the ongoing probe into the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency recently conducted the polygraph test on Sandip Ghosh after conducting raids at multiple locations linked to him in a corruption case.
The IMA had also visited the family of the deceased and was shocked to see their condition. The medical body had also launched a 24-hour-long nationwide strike against the rape and murder case. The association had also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a list of demands in connection with the rape and murder of a young postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
