On August 23, Kollywood witnessed a clash between two top-notch films battle it out at the box office –Vaazhai and Kottukkaali.

Vaazhai directed by Mari Selvaraj, faced off with Kottukkaali produced by actor Sivakarthikeyan.

Going by the box office report, Vaazhai is racing ahead of Kottukkaali.

Vaazhai storms ahead of Kottukkaali at the TN box office

At the end of 5 days, Vaazhai has earned Rs 11.85 crore net, while Kottukkaali has earned Rs 0.08 crore net.

In addition to the gripping story, the positive word of mouth from celebrities and the public have worked in favour of Vaazhai – giving it an edge over Kottukkaali.

About Kottukkaali

Kottukkaali directed by P. S. Vinothraj and produced by SK Productions, revolves around Meena (Anna Ben) who falls in love with a a man from a lower caste. However, her family thinks she is possessed and they decide to take matters in their hands.

Kottukkaali was selected in the Forum section at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival and was screened on 16 February 2024.

The film is co-produced by and The Little Wave Productions. The cinematography is handled by B Sakthivel, and editing by Ganesh Siva.

About Vaazhai

Vaazhai is co-produced and directed by Mari Selvaraj. It is produced by Disney+ Hotstar, Navvi Studios and Farmer’s Master Plan Production.

The film stars debutantes Raghul R, Ponvel M, Kalaiyarasan and Nikhila Vimal in the lead roles, alongside J. Satish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Janaki, Priyanka Nair and Nivedita Rajappan. It is loosely based on Mari Selvaraj's life. The story tells the take of Sivanaindhan who works at a banana plantation while going to school; however, hs faces hardships in his job.

The film has music composed by Mari Selvaraj's regular collaborator, Santhosh Narayanan. It featured cinematography handled by Theni Eswar and editing by Suriya Pradhaman.

The film was shot for the most part in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli.
