Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in comprehensive talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discussions, highlighted by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, centered on enhancing bilateral ties across various sectors including trade, defence, economic cooperation, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and education.

During a press briefing in Kyiv, Jaishankar underscored the importance of the visit, noting that it marked the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kyiv this morning and has concluded his official engagements. This visit is a pivotal moment in our bilateral relationship,” Jaishankar stated.

He further elaborated on the Prime Minister’s itinerary, mentioning that Modi arrived in Kyiv by a special train and was received by Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister at the Kyiv railway station. The Prime Minister also met with the Indian community and Ukrainian students studying Hindi.

Jaishankar provided insights into the discussions between Modi and Zelenskyy, revealing that a substantial portion was dedicated to strengthening bilateral relations. “The discussions covered a wide range of areas including trade, economic cooperation, defence, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and education,” he said.

The External Affairs Minister also mentioned the reactivation of the Intergovernmental Commission, co-chaired by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and himself, to revitalize trade and economic relations, which had seen a decline in recent times. He expressed optimism that the commission would convene before the end of the year.

Addressing India’s humanitarian efforts, Jaishankar highlighted the delivery of 17 consignments of medical aid to Ukraine, including the Bhishm Cube, a compact and versatile medical support unit. A total of 22 tons of medical equipment were handed over during the visit.

The Prime Minister’s visit culminated with a bilateral meeting at the Mariinskyi Palace, where he was warmly received by President Zelenskyy. The two leaders held a restricted meeting to discuss key issues, followed by high-level delegation talks focusing on bilateral cooperation. The visit concluded with the exchange of documents to formalize agreements between the two nations.
