A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck the town of Awash, Ethiopia, on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake occurred at 8:10 p.m. local time at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors were felt in the regions of Āfar, Oromiya, and Dire Dawa, with residents in the capital, Addis Ababa, also reporting shaking. As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or damage.
Several videos and photos shared on social media showed Addis Ababa residents rushing outside their homes after feeling the tremors.

Another wrote, "Has anyone felt tiny shaking of apartment buildings in Addis just five minutes ago? We did and it stayed not more than 3-5 seconds and it occurred twice. It is really scary."

A third resident reported, "Is it #earthquake in Addis Ababa? Our apartment is shaking. It is for the second time in a week, though…"
"Addis Ababa has just experienced a seismic activity. Is it the first in decades? Since our cities are not built with earthquakes in mind, we should take precautions. I read from Yacob WM that building above six stories may not endure," commented another user.
Earlier, on September 30, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck 18 km from Awash, and on September 27, a 4.6 magnitude quake hit the region. No damage or injuries were reported from either incident.
